While you’re in town…

Here are some of our favorite places

The Met

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is an iconic New York institution. Check out the Black Dandy exhibit, but be warned: you may get inspired to do some last minute shopping for your wedding outfit.

A&A Bake and Doubles

If you’re craving Trini food (or want to try it for the first time!), head to A&A in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. You can’t go wrong with an order of doubles and a bake & saltfish (add tomato!).

The High Line

A 1.5-mile long park built along an old railroad line with renowned naturalistic landscape design. There’s a 10a tour on Saturday morning if you want a guided walk through the grounds.

Black-Owned Brooklyn

Tompkins Ave has made a name for itself over the years for black woman-owned businesses like Ancient Blends; Sincerely, Tommy; Zz’s Wine and Beer; and Peaches Hothouse. Start at the intersection of Tompkins Ave and Monroe St and walk south toward Fulton St. While you’re over there, bop over to the other row on Franklin Ave for other black-owned businesses like Marche Rue Dix and Natty Garden.

Guggenheim Museum

Designed by Frank Llyod Wright, the Guggenheim is an absolute delight to wander through. Rashid Johnson is currently featured and his work offers an opportunity to contemplate blackness from many angles. While you’re there, do not miss the Faith Ringgold exhibition.

Lower East Side

One of our favorite Manhattan neighborhoods, the LES feels like it’s managed to maintain some of the NYC grittiness of yesteryear. Grab a coffee at Caffe Vita and see what vintage finds are on offer at Ludlow Flea. If you need a bite, Vanessa’s Dumplings are yummy, quick, and affordable. Still feel like walking? Trek west into Soho and unwind in the Elizabeth Street Gardens before hitting the blocks of classic Soho shops that surround Broadway.
